Want to Become a DJ? Where Do You Start?

One of my biggest questions and I’m sure the same for other aspiring dj’s is where do you start? Most of us don’t have the funds to buy dj equipment and don’t have the skills to begin djaying. Don’t lose hope though because there is an option to learn and get paid if you are willing. For most people, becoming a dj is a dream career and most people will do what it takes to make their dream come true.
Just like any new skill you want to learn, it is wise to find a mentor. Finding a dj to be your mentor isn’t as hard as it sounds. If you live in a big city, there are probably a bunch of dj’s in your area. Heck, I see them driving around all the time in my neighborhood. They are advertising their services on their vehicles. Luckily, I have a friend of a friend who knows an experienced dj who I will be contacting eventually to see if I can get some tutoring.
Not everyone will be as receptive to your requests but don’t just flat out ask for help without offering something in return. Ask of their is a job opening or offer your services for free in exchange for learning the basics. You would be surprised that some dj’s may actually need assistance. If you can cut them a break with free help or low pay in exchange for learning the ropes, they may be more than happy to cooperate.
Everyone has to start somewhere so why not start with a pro who is willing to take you under their wing. Keep your eyes open for any job openings as well as getting the word out among your friends who may know of dj’s in their area. I feel finding a mentor is the best way to go about any new venture. Learning how to dj shouldn’t be any different.
